Iron Fist — The Unbreakable Wall
Stage 5 · Pressure brawler — high armor feel, high damage, low mobility.

Iron Fist is the first boss in the campaign and the game’s first real difficulty check. After four stages of ordinary Fighters, Scouts and a lone Brute, you meet a 500-HP wall that hits for nearly double a normal enemy’s damage. The lesson he teaches is the single most important one in the game: stop mashing, start punishing.
He is deliberately slow. Almost everything Iron Fist does has a long, readable wind-up and a long recovery. If you respect his damage and wait for those recovery windows, he is very beatable with nothing but basic normals. If you crowd him and trade, his 1.8× damage will delete your health bar in three or four exchanges.

The three phases
Like every boss, Iron Fist runs a three-phase AI that escalates at 66% and 33% remaining HP. Each transition adds aggression and speed — and opens a brief invincible intro you can use to charge Ki.
Phase 1 (100% – 66% HP)
Iron Fist opens patiently, throwing single heavy pokes and the occasional Iron Cross. This is your free-information phase — block or dodge, watch how long each attack takes to recover, and answer with one or two quick pokes before backing off.
Phase 2 (66% – 33% HP)
At 66% he speeds up his decision-making and starts fishing for Pile Driver, his command grab. He will walk into throw range and try to snatch you out of a block. Stop turtling; use the brief invincible phase-transition intro to charge a little Ki, then keep moving.
Phase 3 (33% – 0% HP)
Below 33% he chains Earth Crush slams more aggressively and reduces his throw vulnerability. His damage is now genuinely lethal, so trade nothing. This is where you cash in the meter you have been saving — a full Dragon Fist or Super Beam can end the fight before he gets another turn.
Signature moves & how to counter them
Iron Cross
Guard break overhead. A two-armed overhead smash that shatters a held block and staggers you for full damage. Blocking is a trap against it.
Counter: Do not sit in block when you see the overhead wind-up. Dodge-roll (double-tap ↓) through it — the roll’s invincibility beats the guard break cleanly — and punish the long recovery.
Pile Driver
Command grab. A short-range command grab that ignores block entirely and does heavy damage. He fishes for it hard in phase 2.
Counter: Grabs have short range, so the answer is spacing. Bait it by faking an approach, then dodge-roll behind him and start a juggle with a Launcher (↑W).
Earth Crush
AoE ground slam. A leaping slam that produces a shockwave covering the ground around him — dangerous if you are standing next to him at recovery.
Counter: The shockwave is a linear ground effect, so jump or use the depth move (↑/↓) to leave the floor. Punish the landing recovery with your heaviest confirm.
How to beat Iron Fist
Play at the edge of Iron Fist’s reach and let him come to you. Poke with a quick Jab (Q) or Low Kick (A), then immediately retreat out of his range. His slow movement means he cannot chase a disciplined player who keeps resetting the spacing.
When he commits to any heavy attack, that is your turn — not before. Whiff-punish the recovery with a Launcher (↑W) into a short air combo, or a Roundhouse (S) if you just want the damage. Do not greed for long juggles; his juggle resistance drops enemies faster than a normal, so cash out and reset to neutral.
Ki Blast (↓→Q) is your friend here. At 25% meter it chips him safely from a range where he cannot answer, and it builds toward your bigger specials. Because he is stationary so often, you can land these almost for free between his attacks.
Recommended Ki specials
Ki Blast (25%) for safe chip in phases 1–2; save meter for a Dragon Fist (100%) or Super Beam (75%) to burst him down in phase 3.
Common mistakes
- Blocking the Iron Cross — it is a guard break; block simply feeds him a full-damage stagger.
- Crowding him to mash normals. One trade at 1.8× damage undoes a whole punish.
- Spending all your meter early. Iron Fist’s phase 3 is where a saved super closes the fight safely.
TL;DR
Space him out, dodge-roll the overhead and grab, whiff-punish the slow recovery, and save a super for phase 3.
