Frost SovereignThe Eternal Winter

Stage 17 · Glacial zoner — controls space with ice, blocks often, punishes rushdown.

The Frost Sovereign opens the final gauntlet at stage 15, and after the frantic Phantom Blade fight she is a hard gear-change. Where earlier bosses rewarded aggression, the Sovereign is built to punish it: she blocks more than any boss so far, walls off the screen with Frost Shards, and turns any careless approach into a launch with Frost Nova. Rushing her is how you die.

At 820 HP she is a genuine wall, but her damage (1.6×) is the lowest of the three new guardians — this is a fight you lose to impatience, not to raw punishment. Read her zoning, pick your approach, and take small, safe punishes; the ice does not hit hard, but it never stops coming.

The three phases

Like every boss, Frost Sovereign runs a three-phase AI that escalates at 66% and 33% remaining HP. Each transition adds aggression and speed — and opens a brief invincible intro you can use to charge Ki.

Phase 1 (100% – 66% HP)

She holds ground and fires Frost Shards, blocking often between them. Do not throw yourself at her guard — advance behind a blocked shard, poke once, and reset. This is the phase to learn her rhythm.

Phase 2 (66% – 33% HP)

Frost Nova and the gliding Frost Lance enter the rotation and she starts casting Blizzard. Respect the Nova’s range — it launches — and keep some meter for the Blizzard call-out.

Phase 3 (33% – 0% HP)

She leans on Frost Lance and back-to-back Blizzards, and her block rate finally drops. This is your window — commit your saved Ki here, because her guard is no longer the wall it was in phase 1.

Signature moves & how to counter them

Frost Shards

Ranged projectile. A volley of ice shards fired across the screen to keep you at bay and control your approach angle.

Counter: Advance while blocking, or depth-shift (↑/↓) off the shard’s line, then move in during the recovery. Do not try to trade projectiles with a zoner — close the gap instead.

Frost Nova

AoE launcher. An expanding ring of ice centered on the Sovereign that launches anyone caught inside it.

Counter: Stay outside its radius or dodge-roll (double-tap ↓) through the start-up. Punish the long recovery — this is her most committal move up close.

Frost Lance

Gliding dash. A low, gliding ice-lance dash that closes distance fast and sweeps you off your feet.

Counter: Block it or dodge-roll through it — the dash has real recovery on the far side. If you read it, a whiff punish is free.

How to beat Frost Sovereign

Stop rushing. The Frost Sovereign blocks more than any boss before her, so mashing into her guard is a trap. Advance behind blocked shards and take a single poke at a time.

Respect Frost Nova up close. It launches, so never crowd her when your meter for a reversal is empty. Bait it, dodge-roll the start-up, and punish the recovery.

Save your Ki for phase 3. Her guard finally drops below 33% — that is when a banked Power Blast or Ki Burst actually connects instead of bouncing off block.

Recommended Ki specials

Ki Blast to contest her zoning at range; save Ki Burst / Power Blast for the phase-3 window when her block rate drops.

Common mistakes

  • Rushing into her guard in phase 1 and eating a block-punish.
  • Crowding her with no meter and getting launched by Frost Nova.
  • Dumping all your Ki early, when her high block rate wastes it.

TL;DR

Be patient against her zoning, dodge-roll Frost Nova, block the Lance, and spend your saved Ki in phase 3 when her guard finally drops.
